Project Name: City of Edmonton Zero-Emission Buses
Partner: City of Edmonton
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Sector: Public Transit
Participation: up to $14.4 million
Description: The CIB is investing up to $14.4 million to add 20 new zero-emission buses (ZEBs) to the Edmonton Transit Service’s (ETS) fleet. The ZEBs will replace diesel vehicles reaching their end of life. Once in service, ETS will have a fleet of 60 ZEBs.
ETS’ zero-emission buses are quieter and are expected to have lower maintenance and fueling costs compared to equivalent diesel vehicles. The buses contribute to the City’s shift toward more sustainable transportation, lowering its carbon footprint while providing a high-quality transit service for users.
The CIB will finance a portion of the ZEB purchase price and will be repaid from cost savings from the ZEB as measured against costs of an equivalent diesel bus.
The investment supports Canada’s economy by creating new manufacturing opportunities and spin off economic benefits across the supply chain.
Benefits of the CIB Involvement
The CIB’s ZEB initiative assists transit agencies and school boards transition their fleets to modern, environmentally-friendly vehicles. ZEBs contribute to Canada’s shift toward more sustainable transportation and support lower carbon footprints for municipal transit owners and operators.
The CIB’s $1.5 billion ZEB initiative targets the accelerated adoption of an estimated 4,000 ZEBs, comprising of a mix of transit and school buses across Canada.
CIB’s financing, in the form of direct loans, can cover the higher upfront capital costs of ZEBs and charging infrastructure versus diesel buses. The CIB enables partners to take advantage of flexible financing options to modernize their bus fleets on an accelerated basis.
