Enbridge Sustain and Blackstone Energy Services to retrofit and upgrade customer’s buildings

The investment supports Enbridge Sustain’s efforts with partner Blackstone Energy to help large Ontario customers conduct deep energy retrofits.

Fast facts

Upgrades to buildings include on-site geothermal, solar and other renewables, coupled with battery storage.
Universities, colleges and hospitals are among the customers to cut emissions by at least 30 per cent.

We are investing $200 million in the CIB’s largest retrofit opportunity to accelerate the deep energy efficiency retrofits of Enbridge Sustain customer’s buildings in Ontario. To date, the CIB has committed approximately $1.2 billion towards sustainable building retrofits. Buildings are one of the largest sources of GHGs in Canada, accounting for around 18 per cent of total emissions.

Benefits of CIB’s Involvement

The CIB’s Building Retrofits Initiative targets deep energy-efficient upgrade projects which are typically characterized by higher costs and longer payback periods that private capital markets have historically been unwilling to support.

This investment by the Canada Infrastructure Bank to retrofit large buildings in Ontario will help cut emissions and reduce pollution. The work that comes with these deep retrofits will create good jobs in the skilled trades and help reduce energy use – proving that building a clean economy is both good for workers and the environment.

We are excited to announce our collaboration with the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) and Blackstone Energy Services to launch an initiative that offers a practical and affordable solution to large energy users such as universities, hospitals, municipalities, and multi-unit residential properties. This initiative aims to implement deep energy building retrofits that are expected to result in a minimum of 30% emissions reduction. Our collective efforts towards decarbonization are designed to contribute to a greener future for generations to come.
