Remote Nunavut hamlet to build the territory’s first wind energy project
1-megawatt wind turbine and 1 megawatt-hour energy storage facility
Fast facts
We are making our first investment in Nunavut with the territory’s first wind project.
The remote Hamlet of Sanikiluaq will see a replacement of up to 70% or up to 600,000 litres per year of its diesel use from the installation of one wind turbine and an energy storage facility that is expected to supply one megawatt of zero-emission sustainable electricity. Sanikiluaq is Nunavut’s southernmost community with a population of approximately 1,000, of which 95% is Inuit. Profit-sharing from the new infrastructure can be used to offset household electricity bills, new recreational facilities and equipment for school and daycare.
The wind farm is expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by nearly 1,559 tonnes a year.
Benefits of the CIB’s involvement
The project benefits from Indigenous Communities Infrastructure Initiative (ICII) funding, which has at least $1 billion of available capital.
CIB’s involvement enables a faster build out of the project, at a lower cost, to the benefit of an Indigenous community.
