Inuvialuit-led solution to improve energy security in Canada’s North

Infrastructure will support a more reliable and affordable energy supply for six remote Inuit communities.

Fast facts

Facility will be wholly owned by the Inuvialuit, directly benefitting six Inuit communities
Reduces reliance on transporting fuel from southern regions
Creates long-term jobs and economic opportunities for the Inuvialuit

The CIB is investing in the Inuvialuit Energy Security Project (IESP) alongside the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) to advance a community-driven solution that will improve energy security and reliability for six Inuvialuit communities in the Northwest Territories.

Our $100 million loan will advance the development and construction of the M-18 well development to ensure a more reliable energy supply for the next 50 years. Project benefits include reduced energy costs for households and businesses and improved living conditions. The development will create long-term job opportunities and economic growth for the Inuvialuit and eliminate the need to transport liquefied natural gas and synthetic diesel from southern regions.

Benefits of the CIB’s involvement

This project is being financed through the CIB’s Indigenous Community Infrastructure Initiative (ICII) and is our first investment to achieve financial close in the Northwest Territories.

ICII loans provide a service or a direct benefit to First Nation, Inuit, and Métis communities.
