New aviation maintenance hub in Calgary will strengthen Canada’s transportation sector

Financing enabled Calgary International Airport to attract a world-class aviation maintenance hub.

Fast facts

Addresses a critical gap in aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul services in Canada
Expected to create an estimated 160 new permanent, high-skilled jobs by 2030
Will attract domestic and international carriers to Calgary for specialized maintenance services

The CIB is partnering with the Calgary Airport Authority (CAA) to finance a new aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility, and additional infrastructure to support aviation services at the Calgary International Airport, driving long-term investment, job creation and economic benefits to the region.

Securing CIB financing was critical for the CAA to remain economically competitive to attract specialized tenants to develop components of the aviation hub.

Lufthansa Technik, the facility’s anchor tenant, will build and operate a new engine repair station dedicated to LEAP-18, the next generation of reduced emissions aircraft engines. The facility will feature a first-of-its-kind in Canada test cell station, with operations expected to being in 2027.

This state-of-the-art facility will address a gap in Canada’s aviation infrastructure by ensuring critical aircraft repair services are available domestically, rather than sending planes to international markets for routine services.

This airport infrastructure will help relieve demand for MRO services globally and create greater operational efficiency, safety and reliability in the Canadian aviation sector while generating long-term economic development opportunities for the region.

Benefits of the CIB's involvement

This project is being financed through the CIB’s Trade and Transportation sector which supports developing stronger, more efficient corridors to domestic and international markets and helps Canadian businesses compete and grow.

We are grateful to all of our partners in making this facility a reality. It positions Calgary as a centre of strategic aviation services and infrastructure that will support both cargo and passenger flight and strengthens connectivity in and out of the region, making us a central node in the North American aviation network.
