Advancing Cold Lake First Nations (CLFN) ownership of energy project
19.8-megawatt facility will supply 7,000 Alberta households with reliable energy.
Fast facts
We are loaning $26.2 million towards Duchess Solar, located in Newell County, Alberta.
Cold Lake First Nations will hold a majority ownership position in the 19.8-megawatt solar array, which is being developed in partnership with Elemental Energy. Financing for the project includes a collaborative partnership between the CIB, the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation, Selkirk Advisory Group Inc. and Equitable Life.
The project will add new energy capacity to Alberta’s grid from 49,700 solar photovoltaic panels. The reliable, lower-cost electricity will supply more than 7,000 households annually.
Benefits of the CIB’s involvement
This project represents the CIB’s first Indigenous Equity Initiative loan to reach financial close supporting an Alberta-based project. Enabled by CIB financing, Cold Lake First Nation’s majority ownership position will generate economic returns which can be reinvested in the community.
The CIB collaborates with First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities on new infrastructure in partnership with, and for the benefit of Indigenous communities across Canada.
