THE NEED

Before the Mesgi’g Ugju’s’n projects, Gesgapegiag, Gespeg and Listuguj had limited opportunities to participate directly in the development, decision-making and ownership of wind energy projects on their traditional territory. While the communities had not historically played a significant role in the sector, they were increasingly seeking meaningful ways to participate in development and share in its long-term economic benefits.

Through the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation (MMBC), the three communities worked to build the relationships, expertise and capacity needed to become active partners in renewable energy development. This effort led to the first phase of Mesgi’g Ugju’s’n, MU1, which began operations in 2016.

MU2 builds on that experience and reflects the communities’ continued commitment to increasing their participation in clean energy projects. Developed through a 50/50 partnership between MMBC and Innergex, the project supports employment, training, business opportunities and long-term revenues for the communities.

These revenues can be reinvested according to each community’s priorities, including infrastructure, health, education, cultural programs and other essential services. MU2 represents another important step toward greater Mi’gmaq participation, capacity and influence in development occurring within Gespe’gewa’gi'.

A lot of the money stays within the community. They hired 116 individuals from our three communities. I actually have a career now because of the wind farm. Thanks to money made from the [Mesgi’g Ugju’s’n] wind farm which was then reinvested into the three communities, it has been possible to build a water park, a playground, and a community rink.

Mesgi’g Ugju’s’n 2, which is currently under construction, will add 102.2 MW of clean electricity to Quebec’s grid, but its impact is bigger than power generation.

MU2 is creating capacity within the Mi’gmaq communities. Through a 50/50 partnership between Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation (MMBC) and Innergex, MU2 is supporting community members with pathways for training and credited certifications so Mi’gmaq workers can participate in construction, operations and related trades. Through CIB financing, this project is achieving greater expansion goals faster.

The project was designed to prioritize regional hiring, including construction jobs, and support local businesses and contractors to create more income opportunities within the communities.

Wind farm revenues support the development of new community facilities and infrastructure expansions, as well as increasing access to local resources and opportunities to keep community at the heart of the project.
